What are the first steps in the adoption process or where do we begin?
The first thing we always suggest is talking to someone who has been through the process themselves or a resource center that can guide you in the right direction for the area you live in. We first started by using Loving Shepherd as a resource. They can help you decide what type of adoption is for you, domestic or international. They also provide you with agencies that are secure and safe and help you get set up for your home study.
Which leads me to the next step, getting your home study completed. Once you have decided your agency/attorney to work with the next step is paperwork and lots of it :)
If there is one word of advice to a potential adoptive couple what would it be?
To be patient. The road of adoption is a rollercoaster of emotions, ups and down. It is well worth it in the end. But, prepare and guard your hearts for the days ahead and remember that you are your best advocate. Be diligent with staying on top of paperwork and keeping updated with your agency/attorney. A major part of domestic adoption has to do with word of mouth in some cases. Just get the word out there any way that you can. The more people you tell, the more people they tell, and then the word spreads.
Most of all, remember God is in control. I have no doubt that God handpicks out our children for us. God knit them in their mother's womb! He knows the plans He has for them and us. He will make it happen in His timing!
We are worried about financial costs. What resources are out there to help?
The cost of adoption is daunting to most. And that is only natural. Domestic adoption varies from $12,000-$40,000. There are many resournces out there, interest free loans, and tax credits once the adoption is final. Some businesses also provide help/funding to employees that are adopting.
